Fact sheet: Plantain major

This is an article a customer to our nursery gave me.

I would like to share with you my recent experience with a white-tailed spider bite, in the hope that it may help other sufferers, many of whom are probably gardeners.  My 4 year old son was bitten by a white tailed spider on the inside of his elbow while playing in the backyard. It came up as a blister and two days later it had turned into a big pus-filled sore and developed a nasty red ring around it. I took some fresh plantain leaves, crushed it up and applied it directly onto the bite with a bandage to keep it in place. Next day the red ring was gone and the arm looked a lot better.

To be on the safe side I took my son to the doctor who advised me to use cortisone cream. However, all it did was make it turn an angry red!

I used the cream twice every day for two weeks. But I still used the plantain in the night time. Each morning the improvement was obvious and I found it worked better if I first washed off the cortisone. I went back to my regular doctor and told him the story and he told me to forget the cream. After that I left the wound dry through the day and kept the plantain on at night.

In two weeks the problem had gone, with just a pink scar that I check regularly.

I use Plantain major but the more common variety is called P. lanceolata. It has been bothering me that other people may have been needlessly suffering when just a little plantain could fix their problem.

Plantain major is a herb (or weed) most people have growing in their garden. It is good for any bites.
